OT column for those of us who cant kite 60 days a season.

Postby northidahokiter on Tue Oct 30, 2007 7:37 am

Hey admin? I wanted to P.m. You about this topic but then I thought it might be better to get some input from others. But here it is, I dont really have a good thread to put this question in and thats what I am getting at. There are a few poor suckers out there like myself that arent fortunate to live in MT, OR, Southern Id, Utah etc. As well as being stuck with those frickin priorites  . So the bit of kiting community I get to communicate with is thru forums, mostly just here now. :) And as we have such a bitchin community going here, I tend to like to post off topic crap. Just cuz kiters seem to relate. Anyway, Im curious as to what it wuld take to put one more column or section in for OT B.S. like mine, as I have seen that Im not the only one posting OT sometimes. If not, still a bitchin place to come and I will just create off topic threads. If thats ok of course. . What do others think?

northidahokiter,

Nice post. I like to see users come up with ideas or suggestions for the site. I have thought of making an off-topic forum before and never really decided for or against it. This is what I came up with.

Pros:
When the forum becomes bigger off topic posts will be in their own spot leaving less clutter around the other forums.

Cons:
Separate posts in smaller categories break up the size of the forum. Sometimes forums have too many categories (forums) that ultimately separate users and less posts are made. Or users cannot find the posts that are interested in responding to.

By the way, for those of you that don't know there are two handy links on the top left of the main board index. They show all unanswered posts and active topics. These make it easy to find out whats going on in all topics in one page.

Yeah - I kind of like the idea of off topic stuff. You can post a topic about how you had a sweet powder day - or how you sent mountain biking and caught some sweet air - or white water kayaking - or got some nice waves paddling in or whatever the case may be. I'm all for it.

For what its worth - here are my ideas for the forum (Take them or leave them - I'll still be a part of the forum).

I think we should combine the kitesurfing, snowkiting, landboarding, buggying forums - put them all together. We are not all that different from eachother - it would be good to interact with all the other kiters out there.

Combine Kiting videos and kiting pictures - pretty similar stuff - no need to have two.

I like the ideas of kitemares - but maybe we could just have that as a thread in the snowkiting, landboarding, buggying forums (smash it all together :) )

Then smash in beginner questions, foil kites, LEI kites, Kite Mods into one section called mods and questions.

Keep the buy/sell gear separate.

Add in a separete section - it could be called kiters anonymous (it will be a section for all OT stuff - jokes, stuf on youtube, takls of weather, mountain biking, snowboarding, wives that won't let you out of the house, and so on and so on).

Also - change the display of the subsequent posts. Put in big letters the writers name and in small letters the "RE" part. Right now when you scroll the "RE" part is big (which I'm not sure is all that important) and the writer's name is small - which I feel is much more important.

Just my three and a half cents man.

Oh - and I love all the smiley faces - the more the better!!

Im for it! I do like to have a seperate snow, surf, land sections, but it would be nice to smash the vids and pics together. And maybe just have one section for tricking out your gear, mods, and other technical stuff.

NorthIdahokiter is right about having one more place for zany, wacky shit that kiters want to talk about when they arent talking about kiting!

Grab me a drink eh!

WHY - aren't you out 60+ days/year???? Don't wanna hear any of this responsibility/family/job sillyness. I can't claim 60 days kiting - yet - but there's definitely 60 days looming for snowplay.

That's what I like about kiting is you don't have to dedicate an entire day - you can go play & still get home in time to be Momma's hero  (like that'll ever happen), or hit it for 2 hrs after work etc. My kite/lanboard goes with me everywhere in my work & once the snow arrives it'll be boarding gear. To hit anything good with my splitboard in the backcountry you're definitely dedicating a full day almost every time - that'll still happen - lots - though.

No more excuses - 60 day minimum required. But then OT chatter would be great too.

So should we make a requirement that all members kite at least sixty days

LewMT, Before I found the great sport of kiting, I settled myself down between two pretty good quiet ski areas thinking it was heaven. Unfourtunately it is at least 3 hrs to any dependable kiting. To think about hitting it after work is just not feasible. Therefore for now I am stuck being a weekend warrior, :wallbash: it doesnt take just a day, usually a whole weekend of dedication. The way I figure it, for Nov till Apr. theres 24 weekends which is 48 days, add on another 8 for xmas vacation etc. and I come up with 56, still 4 days short, and thats if I made the roadtrip every single weekend. That would leave no time to go scout the potential areas that might lie north of here by an hr or two. To sum it up, some of us just dont live in a kite friendly area......................yet........at this point. many auto collision shops in Bozeman?
