Self launch

Postby northidahokiter on Thu Oct 18, 2007 3:00 pm

I just wanted to be the first one to post a topic somewhere and this was the last one left. So, this is the best one I could come up with. Whats everyones favorite method of self launching, I know most brands recomend something different. Ive been dying to try tying off my chicken loop to a solid object, walk the kite to the side of the window, and as the website says, calmly walk back to the kite where it is gently resting on a wingtip waiting for launch. I just havent had the balls to try it for the first time. I usually end up parking the kite leading edge down, and pulling on line till is flips arond and hot launches!! :o :o
I like to stand as close to the edge as I can, because from there you can see all the things you cant from the center.

I learned a cool trick kiting in the gorge. I think this works mostly with C or Hybrid C's

setup backwards in other words leading edge down walk your lines in the back of the kite or the (cup) set your front lines and 5th first then do your brake lines. now walk in a arc once hooked up to a side of the window and let the kite catch some wind then launch it.

For landing i take it to the edge of the window and dump it. IF possible find a bush up wind then side in your kite and dump it the bush will kick off rotor and stall the kite so it doesn't try to relaunch. ITs always nice to have help but this method worked great in 20+ gorge winds.

I've seen the bow boys with sticks and hold down devices that work great. I've been on hybrids and C's so i'm not experienced in this dept.
I love the wind and I love getting HIGH on air.

The method in the middle of the vid where the kite is hooked to the red dodge, that was the method I was speaking of. Hey! I thought this was us kiteforum, no French accented vids please!! ;) Nah that was pretty good. Im gonna try it with an ice spike this winter. Also I remember Criznach<<---hope I got the right chris there, anyway I remember a chris with the blue and yellow waroo using that big metal pole in the harbor area @ Georgetown to launch with this method.

Good job Buzz I think this is a great method for the Bows I've yet to get on one but i think i'm going to try out Triplethreats aresnal of bows and see how they are. The last time i was offered to get on a bow was back when the turbo diesel first came out All i remember was watching a few guys and gals get on this thing and getting plowed "wow that thing turns inside out and its so fast i didn't know what happened" Well that was enough for me to stay away from it. It really was a mistake but with the link, turbo2 and now that REV i think problem has been solved.

There is only one way to self launch. Just a couple of different ways of getting there.

Land kiting and Kitesurfing......Kite on wingtip slightly to the side and downwind of launcher.....Sand is Best! Fold in wingtip- deposit sand on wingtip, walk back to the bar and launch from the side of the wind window....

Snowkiting- You can start with your lines and bar set up downwind, but eventually have to walk it up anyways....seems like extra work to start down there anyhow and in snow, we all just want to ride fast as possible. Start with your kite leading edge down facing into the wind. Give the kite a one third turn, so that one of the wingtips is barely catching the wind.....the slight twist you give your kite is the key, and this works for snow because kites slide without harm.
Your truck will not be in the launching area so get over the idea of having that around. If your kite wants to blow away, your turning it more than a third....Walk back to the bar, hook in, give the line corresponding with the exposed downwind wingtip a pull, and shazam...your kite will flip around cupping the wind and your ready for a reverse relaunch....If your kite doesnt reverse relaunch like ozones, Hqs, and Waroos, get a new one!
This is Bow style launch...I dont know what people do with older c kites.

Your methods for the snow launch are tried and true A.J. At least with real kites. However, the comment about having a car in the launch area, I disagree, when your a pro like me ;) , dont you launch from right around the cars at Haggin? Also at Georgetown there is that big steel bar, just waiting to impale someone, just as you walk out the Jetty, may not be a car hitch, but its enough to hold a chicken loop and flag out the kite till ready to go. Im personally just searching for that dedicated female kite launching assistant that will travel with me always ready to help launch and double as a warming method at night! :)
