self landing sle Bow kites

Postby triplethreatsnowkiteteam on Sun Nov 18, 2007 8:01 am

Whats up dooders and dudettes...I found a new way to self land a bow kite on a different kite forum this morning, and thought that the kitesurfing thread could use some attention. Here it is!

Here is the method I use when self-landing the kite in strong winds:

Sheet the depower strap all the way in. Start with the kite high, sweep it aggressively across the window. When it gets about ten feet off the ground, with LE facing down, three things should be happening at the same time:

1) step quickly towards the kite
2) unhook
3) pull the front line that is attached to the top edge of the kite.

Normally by pulling the front line it pulls the kite towards the ground and into a safe resting position. However, if you step too quickly towards the kite OR not pulling hard enough on that front line, the kite might stand on its tip and will try to take off. The key here is to commit and keep pulling that line as hard as you can, and ONLY that line so there must be absolutely no tension on any other lines.

After practicing a few times self-landing becomes a piece of cake.

Triplethreatsnowkiteteam this is actually an excellent technique. :D
However I would recommend to practice that technique in light wind condition to get use to :gimp:

I actually picked this techique up off one of those tri-cities wa locals down at Roosevelt, I dont unhook tho, if it doesnt quite pull the leading edge down all the way, it just tends to fall back into the window a little bit but usually still hangs out on the side in a safe area. But then you do have to start over. Also, with my kites I dont really have to move towards it, I just start yankin line in quick, could be tricky in the snow with gloves on tho. Nice Post
I like to stand as close to the edge as I can, because from there you can see all the things you cant from the center.
