Best Place to Live in the Summer for Kiters

Postby snowkiter3 on Fri Jan 04, 2008 7:05 pm

I just want to see what kind of response I can get from this post.

What place has the best kiting in the world during the summer in your opinion...this can be snow or water.

Most consistent/ideal wind conditions should be the most important factor when posting

last summer we went out to the oregon coast!(port orford area) for about 4 months. I marked everyday i rode on the calendar....roughly 20 outta 30 days every month. I'm already preparing to do it all again this next summer. We're looking thur the rentals, if anyone is interested shoot me a pm.

The Oregon coast is totally money!!

Portland is also great in the summer. You have a lot of different options and I would say 8 or 9 days of 10 you can ride somewhere. You have Sauvie's Island and Rooster Rock which are both close - but light winds. Jones Beach - steady winds with relatively flat water. Stevenson - which is somewhat close - somewhat steady winds. Then you have the spit - very strong winds. And then you can make a trip out to the oregon coast - an hour and fourty five minutes - maybe two and a half hours - depending on where you want to go and how fast you drive.

Summer time in Portland is very sweet!! Also there is some great mountain biking close by - a lot of variety in riding!!

San Fransisco hands down.
It's the best of all worlds if you can afford to live there.

What's it like in San Fran? What are the conditions, wind speeds, and average blowin days. Is it strictly water kiting or is it a multi-tude of the sport? Never been there but here its outrageously expensive but what major city in cali isn't. Cool keep us informed.
I love the wind and I love getting HIGH on air.

Bro - it really depends. Some have a two kite quiver - like a 9 and a 13 Rev. However, they can't fly in the nuking winds. We get winds up to 40 mph in september and once in a while throughout the summer. Some guys just have a 13 and 16 Rhino - they stay out where the winds are light.

Myself - i fly everything. I have a 5, 7, 9, 11 waroo quiver and then a 16M vegas for the light stuff. I use the 9 and the 11 mostly - however, the 16 comes out when its light winds and the 5 comes out when its nuking out. Once in a long while I'll even get over powered on my five. I'm a solid 185 pounds. I also have a small and large board which helps with the different wind conditions. I would like to add a small board for nuking conditions this coming season- I can hold down more wind with a smaller board.

Not everyone has a full quiver like mine. The guys who live in Hood River generally don't have kites above an 11. Because the gorge generally blows much harder and if for whatever reason its blowing light they simply won't go out. Jokingly - they will call themselves wind snobs :) And some guys don't have a 5M - they just stay away from the nuking conditions.

Again - it really depends on your budget and your riding styles.
