Well there i was on a mountaintop waiting for the perfect moment to transfer from the contoured ground to the beautiful blue skies. After everyone said it would be super mellow and not much to work with I'm gone. I'm flying with a new ballast or flight deck and tried to tape my vario so when i'm in flight i can pay attention to whats going on. After waiting for a few hangliders to launch it was my turn. I have a nice clean getaway and start heading to the face of the mountain. It was a super nice slope that produced very great soaring conditions. Anyway i'm going by this area and hear lift on the vario so i fly back a couple of times and find it in the same spot then i got this bright idea to turn full on into it and didn't realize the amount of sink i'd been producing by basically droping the entire time. well i turned and immediately fell into the sink down i go while turning well the hill looks close and i'm coming in way to fast. I turned harder followed by an immediate correction to stabilize the glider and trying to attempt a side hill landing. Wham i hit the only rocky area on that hill and snapped my leg.
Definetly a painful and expensive mistake. Respect the air.
