It finally happened, the nature park that I have been riding in for 2 years is probably going to make it illegal to fly kites. I am the only one that flies around here., so I'm taking it personal . For two years I have been riding out there, I have talked to the beach cops, park rangers and everyone had nothing but praise. But today......15-20mph gusts to30 mph out of the west. Wooooo hooooo I'm cruisin along havin a blast and suddenly I see a hampton parks and recreation truck. No big deal they come out to check the dunes everyday.( you are not allowed to go in the dunes because it is a seabird nesting sanctuary) Then they stop and this little chubby dork gets out of the truck and is talking to my wife.As I approach them downwind of course, I hear my wife say "YOU NEED TO TALK TO THIS LADY!". So I spun out ,put the kite at zenith and approached this dude lookin butch. "I'm not sure you can do that here, I am gonna have to ask my supervisor ,but I don't think you are going to be allowed to aaannnyyyymoooorrreeee............"( time stood still for a moment.) ."I'm concerned you might go in the dunes with that" I really did try to explain to her that going in soft ,dry ,loose sand was not any fun at all(obe) but all I got was "I did not come out here to argue" twice! I wish I would have asked her if she did not know if it was allowed , then why was she bothering me ? GO FIND OUT FIRST DUMBASS! Anyway I shot the admin an E-MAIL pleading my case but Ifeel bad ju-ju about this. It is the only local spot I got to ride at.I see me going to jail behind this (BREAKING THE LAW BREAKING THE LAW) I will ride anyway,cops can chase me if they want. They can put me in jail.But I have a lifetime lease on that little stretch of sand that spends 50% of the time underwater. Damn I'm on a rant , let me stop.....Breathe O.k. It still sucks!!!!! I need beer!!!! sorry to whine here , but that is what your here for.

Anyways this is becoming more and more common and will only get worse. I've seen this in many places and have been posted on the forum a few times.

Doesn't it suck. We call them the (fun police) come out not having any clue of the actual law or what the rules actually are. They greet you with alot of authority basically wrecking your fun cause they have a job or position that empowers them to tell people what they can an cannot do while they can't conceive what it is your actually doing. Most go right to safety concerns others feel as if its their property they don't own and is being threatened by some new cult takeover.

I'm up against the fence on this one. Part of me says screw them the other part of me says be responsible and think about other future kiters and respect the wishes.

In your case it sounds as if its public land that is soley your home to kiting that is different than the soccer mom problems we face here. Its easy to get torked off but be careful what you do or say to the authorities
The good ol days are over and it may be time to take a more in depth look at the laws and rules of where you are kiting.

Whats the rules there?
Who owns the land?

Find out as much info as you can before going back. Come prepared and make them eat their own crap.

The only true way to win this game is to play the game. Its time consuming and can cause undesired stress but if you believe in it you may start a new kiting spot that is safe from this kind of stuff.

For example this is a much larger issue but in this issue of hang/paragliding magazine. A fly site was in jeopardy in a town that I really enjoy flying over. The airport and the hang gliders got into a pissing match over stupid stuff and ended up shutting it down. Well they pleaded and brought everyones attention to the matter and really watched and rehearsed what to say to the officials and WON. Basically F$%k you airport we were here first and your flight path sucks choose another approach that is less dangerous anyways. They also got the landowners blessing and the forest service.

You won't end up in that kinda spotlight I hope but take it easy drink a beer and lets figure out what we can do

craz z here you are,these are the signs at the gate, rather ironic don't you think. The pedestrians only thing, I don't know what to make of,people ride beach cruisers all the time out there. No problem, hell ,they can go up in the dunes if they want . I can't WTF! But I agree that being rash and doin' something stupid won't help matters .But I also have no intention of yielding to someone without a badge.For all I know she might be some trash picker-upper that thinks she is somebody.So until a Park ranger with a badge or a cop comes out and says she has authority,I am ridin'... to be cont. peace out my brother

Yes Weldn, Im with craz in the fact that we have missed you, been pretty caught up in the snow side of things I guess. That is a real ironic sign for people to be crying about, you kiting. Sorry to hear about your coming battle, but good luck with it, at least its just you, and not a huge group of disrespectful folks to give you a bad name.

See this is what I mean when I say us kiters should all wear pistols whenever we're out kiting as a safety precaution. You just never know what you're gonna meet up with out there. Fat girls that work for the feds need to be shot twice before answering any questions. Once for being fat & 2nd for being a Federale.

Besides that what if you were out in this wildlife park & some crane flew up into your bridle lines - hell you'd never get that thing out without a gun.

lewmt , no cranes around beach. Just little sandpipers and assorted gulls. They actually do not seem to be bothered by the kite, some just glide past it . And you don't want to shoot the gulls they are a protected species , BIG FINE$$$$$$.

hopefully ya know I was just blazing some major doo doo - not sure what got into me....although...I think we kiters definitely need to live down to our reputation & quit trying to be happy ambassadors
