LEI's & Bladders

Postby lewmt on Fri Dec 21, 2007 7:41 am

So I've focussed on foils so far but am wondering since so many people fly LEI's -
What do you do about leaks in the bladders?
Is this something that should only be repaired by a technician requiring it be shipped away?
Are there ways to repair in-the-field so you can keep flying that day when it happens?

Dumb newb :club: questions I know but..... well.....what can I say
^y^

Well all i can say is that the sewing of sails and leading edges need to be done by a pro but if you have some patience and a short lesson on bladder repair anyone that loves kiting can macgyver it. Bladders are like condoms very thin and can break on occasion. Rule #1 like a foil never powerup while crashing the foil will cost way more in repair and the bladder can break easily. Normally a leading edge is first to go cause it will take the impact first. Most kites are sold with patch kits. I've seen also that a break at the end you may tie a knot to get you by. Weird things i've seen is any exposed bladder material to the elements will result in a pop. Make sure they are in their sheath and well protected. Its not that hard to fix really. I still wanna get my hands on some of the airtime's bladder replacement parts. I've never broke a bladder or a strut since i've been flying although it will happen some time and i've been involved with some kites that have broke and did the above repairs to.
I love the wind and I love getting HIGH on air.

Dave,
For bladder repair I use different things depending on were it blew out at. For most quick fixes the patches work however you still lose air slowly out of them. They are still rideable just might have to re-pump every couple of hours or so. I also use a glue that melts and binds the bladder back together. It works amazing and I have never had one blow back out in the same spot after using the glue. I can't remember the name of it right now. I keep it in my shop for repairs as well as patches.
