Kite care & maintenance

Postby StrangeRanger on Mon Feb 11, 2008 9:09 am

Hi all,
Noob here. Just got done my first w/end of kitting. The wind was not good, it was snowing like a banshee, but I met some nice folks and had a great time anyway. But, I have a general kite care question. It was snowing like mad and everything was absolutely soaked by the end of it all. I know stuff shouldn't be packed away wet, so I hung it to dry. I basically strung a line in my basement and draped the kite over it. I didn't use clothes pins or anything like that, just draped it over the line. Is there anything wrong w/ this set up? Any reason I shouldn't be "hangin' my kit out to dry"?
Thanks,
j

Is there any reason not to hang it out to dry. Seriously you wanna make sure and dry them out thoroughly. Sounds like you're going above and beyond the call of duty hangin nice and uniform on a close line. I normally let them dry out on the floor. Never let them dry out in the direct sunlight. These materials yet very strong are very suseptable to sun fading and thus reducing the poroisty of the material. Sounds kinda silly in the summer when its nice out but you should look for shade at all possible times to stash your kite when not in use. Wet kites don't fly well. They are snowy and cold when you stuff them and wet and soggy when they warm up. That extra weight can freeze snowkiting making your kite useless. take your bar out too and get it nice and dry. The lines will stiffen up if you're using white spectra not dyneema. (dyneema lines are a bit softer in outer texture) This makes it easier to unwind and untangle. Other thing is rot. if you put your kite away wet and can't get back to it for months rotting can occur. Wash your kite if dirty with water and dry natrually no chemicals of any kind.
I love the wind and I love getting HIGH on air.
